Karel Arnoldus Craeijvanger (Utrecht, 1817-1868) was a Dutch composer, singer, violinist and guitarist. Only two of his guitar compositions are known to date, the Trois Nocturnes and the Introduction & Variations sur un thème de l’ópera Freischütz (Weber). Both pieces are part of the archives of the Nederlands Muziek Instituut. One third piece, Fantasy on a Schubert’s Lied, mentioned in a recital program in 1865, remains unknown.
The Trois Nocturnes, composed and dedicated to Monsieur J. de Beyer, were published by Craeijvanger himself. Perhaps for this reason, the graphic quality of the original edition is poor, with some mistakes and inconsistencies.
After listening to this pieces in its first recording by Fernando Riscado Cordas in his impressive CD/Book “The Poetic Guitar”(2014), I requested a copy of the original version from the NMI, to make a clean and modern edition for my own use. The minor mistakes were corrected and all fingerings are editorial. The 8vb marks, intended for guitar with additional basses are not original and therefore, optional.
Despite I made this edition more than 3 years ago, I decided to publish it now, after recording it to the VI Seminario Internacional de Guitarristas in Colombia (online version, alas…).
